Internal Geometry of a G. de La Tour’s "Night": "The Apparition of the Angel at saint Joseph" (Museum of Fine Arts, Nantes)

The internal geometry allows painters to organize the pictorial space to make it coherent and harmonious. But the internal geometry and the support on which it is plotted, do not appear in the painted work, neither in its radiographic image, nor in its infra-red image: The internal geometry remains secret. However, since the support is sometimes a square meshing or most often a harmonic meshing, the pictorial elements are quantified, the internal geometry becomes "discrete" and can be detected at the same time as its support. The study presented here concerns the search for the internal geometry of one of Georges de la Tour’s masterpieces: "The Apparition of the Angel at Saint Joseph" (Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes). This study helps to illustrate and confirm the methodology developed in our book dedicated to internal geometry. It is also an invitation to read this book, which we will sometimes refer to.

La géométrie interne permet aux peintres d’organiser l’espace pictural pour le rendre cohérent et harmonieux. Mais la géométrie interne et le support sur lequel elle est tracée, n’apparaissent pas dans l’oeuvre peinte, ni dans son image radiographique, ni dans son image infra-rouge : la géométrie interne demeure secrète. Cependant, le support étant parfois un maillage carré ou le plus souvent un maillage harmonique, les éléments picturaux sont quantifiés, la géométrie interne devient "discrète" et peut être décelée en même temps que son support. L’étude présentée ici concerne la recherche de la géométrie interne de l’un des chefs-d’oeuvre de Georges de La Tour : "L’Apparition de l’ange à saint Joseph" (musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes). Cette étude permet d’illustrer et de confirmer la méthodologie développée dans notre livre consacré à la géométrie interne. C’est aussi une invitation à la lecture de ce livre, auquel nous ferons parfois référence.
