[FORTHCOMING] Biomass as a driver of the green economy: the example of the flax sector in maritime Flanders

Replacing fossil fuels with renewable materials will be at the heart of the climate and economic challenges of the next few years. Whether for the production of energy or manufactured products, the billions of tonnes of oil extracted each year will have to be replaced by large-scale biomass exploitation. From the point of view of environmental constraints, the intensification of biomass production and its integration into the bio-economic sphere are not without their pitfalls, as they run counter to sustainable development and certain precepts of the eco-economy. In a context of massive use of biomass, the contribution of all local and regional resources will be needed. Flax, an ancestral and virtuous fiber, is a good example of sustainable production with a territorial and global vocation. It offers major economic development opportunities that a region like French Flanders must seize.

La substitution des ressources fossiles par des matières renouvelables sera au cœur des défis climatique et économique des prochaines années. Que ce soit pour la production d’énergie ou de produits manufacturés, les milliards de tonne de pétrole extraits chaque année devront être remplacés par l’exploitation à grande échelle de la biomasse. Du point de vue des contraintes environnementales, l’intensification de la production de la biomasse et son intégration au sein de la sphère bioéconomique ne sont pas sans écueils car en contradiction avec le développement durable et certains préceptes de l’éco-économie. Dans ce contexte, la massification de l’usage de la biomasse doit passer par la contribution de toutes les ressources locales et régionales. Le lin, fibre ancestrale et vertueuse, est un bon exemple d’une production durable à vocation à la fois territoriale et mondiale. Elle offre des opportunités de développement économique important qu’un territoire comme la Flandre maritime française se doit de saisir.
