The functional economy as an innovative business model: the original concept at the proof of legitimacy systems

This article proposes a reinterpretation of Orio Giarini and Walter Stahel’s seminal work on the “new service society” [GIA 89] in the broader scientific context that saw the emergence of a plurality of concepts related to the “functional economy”. It analyzes the legitimate foundations of this use-based transactional mode within L. Boltanski and L. Thévenot’s framework on the “Economies of Worth” [BOL 91]. It shows that the co-authors of The Limits to Certainty conceptualized a specific form of exchange that does not fundamentally call into question the industrial-merchant principles of the economic system, but rather tends to bend its devices in order to improve its performance in economic, social and environmental terms. This analysis allows us to highlight the differences and similarities between the principles underlying their original conception and the principles that underlie the constructions developed in its continuum.

Cet article propose une relecture des travaux séminaux d’Orio Giarini et Walter Stahel [GIA 89] sur la « nouvelle société de service », dans le contexte scientifique plus large qui a vu l’émergence d’une pluralité de concepts en lien avec « l’économie de fonctionnalité ». Son objectif consiste à analyser les fondements légitimes de ce mode transactionnel basé sur l’économie des usages à l’aune du modèle des cités de L. Boltanski et L. Thévenot [BOL 91]. Il montre que les co-auteurs des Limites du Certain conceptualisent une forme d’échange qui ne remet pas fondamentalement en cause les principes industrialo-marchands du système économique, mais qui tend à en infléchir les dispositifs de sorte à en améliorer la performance, en termes économiques, sociaux et environnementaux. Ce résultat permet de mettre en relief les écarts et proximités entres les principes qui sous-tendent leur conception originelle et ceux qui imprègnent les fondements des constructions qui s’en sont inspirées par la suite.
