[FORTHCOMING] Boosting the Innovation Capacity of SMEs in a Changing World

Despite their strengths, SMEs appear to have an insufficiently exploited potential for innovation. This is especially true in times of crisis. In a context characterised by three sources of destabilisation – economy of platform, the COVID-19 health crisis and market tensions – this article aims to suggest ways of boosting the innovation capacity of SMEs. After recalling the main obstacles of SMEs in terms of innovation – which are mainly due to limited access to resources –, and their main strength – which is mainly due to their organisational structure –, we consider how these changes challenge the capacity of SMEs to innovate. The resulting management and research issues lead us to shift the cursor from the SME’s manager to its teams and from outside collaborative innovation to inside collaborative innovation.

Malgré leurs atouts, les PME apparaissent comme un potentiel d’innovation insuffisamment exploité. Cela est d’autant plus vrai en période de crise. Dans un contexte caractérisé par trois sources de déstabilisation (développement d’une économie de plateforme, crise sanitaire COVID-19 et tensions sur les marchés) cet article a pour objectif de proposer des pistes pour favoriser la capacité d’innovation des PME. Après avoir rappelé les principaux freins des PME en matière d’innovation – qui tiennent majoritairement à un accès limité aux ressources –, et leur principale force – qui s’explique surtout par leur structure organisationnelle –, nous envisageons comment ces mutations challengent la capacité à innover des PME. Les pistes et axes de recherche qui en découlent conduisent notamment à déplacer le curseur : du dirigeant de la PME vers ses équipes et d’une innovation collaborative externe vers une innovation collaborative interne.
