Woodcraft illustrated by a set of tools from the late 3rd / early 4th century AD discovered at La Croix-Saint-Ouen (Hauts-de-France, Oise)

The preventive archaeological excavation of a Roman rural settlement carried on the “Les Jardins” site at La Croix-Saint-Ouen (Hauts-de-France, Oise) led to discovery in context of a kit mainly of tools. Within this unique assemblage, 24 pieces (adze, plane, chisels, bits…) illustrate different trades and activities related to woodworking at the end of the 3rd / beginning of the 4th century. Their presentation gives the opportunity to put different themes into perspective: vocabulary used by the archaeologist; linkage to different stages of woodworking and to a trade; immuability of tool shapes and associated gestures; comparisons and suggestions of the meaning of the assembly.

La fouille archéologique préventive d’un établissement rural romain réalisée sur le site « Les Jardins » à La Croix-Saint-Ouen (Hauts-de-France, Oise) a permis la découverte en contexte d’un trousseau majoritairement constitué d’outils. Au sein de cet assemblage singulier, 24 pièces (herminette, rabot, ciseaux, bédanes, mèches…) illustrent différents corps de métiers et activités liés au travail du bois à la fin du IIIe / début du IVe siècle. Leur présentation donne l’opportunité de mettre en perspective différentes thématiques : vocabulaire employé par l’archéologue ; rattachement à différentes étapes du travail du bois et à un corps de métier ; immuabilité des formes d’outils et des gestes associés ; comparaisons et propositions d’interprétation sur la signification de l’assemblage.
