National heritage and transmission of woodwork techniques in contemporary South Korea

In 2017, during a research mission in South Korea, I met a young contemporary artist. She insisted on introducing me to her Master, a woodworker who was about to be given the title of Living National Treasure. However, the Master was not willing to consider her as his disciple, because she would only visit him when in need of help for her artistic projects, whereas a disciple would be expected to engage fully in the learning process, in order to patiently acquire, day after day, the necessary experience to feel, to understand and to work with wood, a living and unpredictable material. The title of Living National Treasure is the highest distinction within a highly formalized ranking system implemented in the 1960s in order to safeguard endangered crafts. This paper studies the connections between such prestigious titles, specific representations of craftsmen, skills, and forms of transmission, and cultural notions regarding wood.

En 2017, lors d’une enquête ethnographique en Corée du Sud, je fais la rencontre d’une jeune artiste. Elle tient à me présenter son maître, un menuisier sur le point d’acquérir le titre de Trésor national vivant. Le sexagénaire, lui, rechigne à la considérer comme sa disciple : elle ne vient que lorsqu’elle a besoin d’aide pour ses projets artistiques, au lieu de s’engager pleinement afin d’acquérir, jour après jour, l’expérience nécessaire pour éprouver, comprendre et travailler le bois, matériau vivant et imprévisible. Le titre de Trésor national vivant constitue la plus haute distinction dans un système de grades extrêmement formalisé, mis en place dans les années 1960 dans le but de sauvegarder des savoir-faire menacés. À partir de cet exemple, nous verrons comment l’attribution de titres prestigieux mobilise des représentations à la fois de l’artisan, de son art, et de formes de transmission qui impliquent une conception particulière du matériau bois.
