Cultural uses of Morinda lucida Benth. in Africa

The Morinda lucida Benth. is an African wood, distributed over two thirds of the continent. This species is not threatened by genetic erosion but it is listed as essential for indigenous societies because it accompanies humans in their daily lives and in their funeral rites. All parts of the wood are used: trunk, bark, branches and roots. Depending on the climatic characteristics, its appearance varies from a twisted shrub to a medium tree with a regular bole of more than twenty meters in height and sixty centimeters in diameter. Morinda lucida has many qualities that make it a good timber species: fine grain, good resistance to pressure, insects, and mould. Pirogues, pits, furniture, or statuary therefore can be made with this species. But its main uses are dyeing and medicine. The variability of know-how, the diversity of vernacular names and its proverbs are indications of a species with strong symbolic and identity connotations.

Il n’est pas menacé d’érosion génétique mais il est répertorié comme étant une espèce végétale essentielle aux sociétés autochtones accompagnant l’humain tant dans son quotidien que dans ses rites funéraires. Toutes les parties du bois sont utilisées : tronc, écorce, branches et racines. En fonction des caractéristiques climatiques, son apparence est variable allant d’un arbuste tortueux à un arbre avec un fût régulier de plus de vingt mètres de haut et de soixante centimètres de diamètre. Le Morinda lucida présente de nombreuses qualités qui lui permettent d’être une bonne essence pour le bois d’oeuvre : grain fin, bonne résistance à la pression, aux insectes et aux moisissures. Construction navale, charpente, mobilier ou statuaire peuvent donc être produits localement avec cette essence. Cependant, ses utilisations principales sont tinctoriales et médicales. La variabilité des savoir-faire couplée à la diversité de ses noms vernaculaires et aux proverbes qui lui sont rattachés sont des indices d’une essence à forte connotation symbolique et identitaire.
